What is an Alien?

The CHRIST Culture Blog | June 1st, 2026 | Rev. Dr. Carole Hulslander

According to Cambridge.org, the word alien means “creatures from another planet.”

The media is filled with stories, videos, and sightings of “aliens,” which are beings not made from the dust of this planet and/or from another dimension. But my primary concern is the gospel of CHRIST and HIS church. How does this fascination with unearthly beings contribute to the furtherance of CHRIST’s plans for HIS Church?

First, let’s address the alien from a biblical standpoint. Are there aliens in Scripture? The Bible records many encounters with beings that might be considered alien. Let’s begin by reading the first one recorded in Genesis 3:1-4, where Satan used a snake to deceive humans. “Now the snake was more able to fool others than any animal of the field which the LORD GOD had made. He said to the woman, “Did GOD say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?” Then the woman said to the snake, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden. But from the tree which is in the center of the garden, GOD has said, ‘Do not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.”’” In Revelation 12:9, “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

There is no clear scripture that names Satan as an angel, but he is described as a guardian cherub, which is not a little baby with wings. Cherubim, which may be higher in the order of beings than angels, have multiple faces and wings. They serve as guards of sacred places. In Job 1:6, Satan stands before GOD with the other “sons of GOD.” In Matthew 25:41, “the devil and his angels” reveal Satan’s authority over the fallen angels. Revelation 12:7, describing the end times as a war, says, “Michael, an archangel, and the angels (he had authority over) fought against the dragon (Satan) and his angels.”

Why would Satan, a cherub, rebel against GOD? According to Isaiah 14:12-14, Satan rebelled against GOD because of his pride. Satan did not just want to be the most powerful and beautiful but wanted to be GOD. Satan wanted to be worshiped. So, he rebelled, lost his position, and was cast to earth. We now know him as the devil, Satan. Scripture makes it plain that he and his fallen angels will spend eternity in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:10).

We have the witness of Scripture that other beings were created by GOD; however, those humans who have their hope in JESUS have a special place in HIS plan for HIS creation because we bear the image of the creator (Genesis 1:26-28). Therefore, JESUS has sided with us, and we will reign with HIM. 2 Timothy 2:10-12; Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the chosen, so they might obtain the salvation that is in Messiah Yeshua with eternal glory. Trustworthy is the saying: If we died with HIM, we will also live with HIM; if we endure, we will also reign with HIM; if we deny HIM, HE will also deny us.
